The first person to deal with this may have been Cornelis Drebbel in 1610 when he deployed the first submarine. With 4 oarsmen submerged in a leaky wooden sub, theyâd have too much co2 and too little oxygen. Somehow they were able to stay for hours at a time.
Robert Boyle describes Drebbelâs use of a âchymical liquorâ to refresh the air.
âParacelĆżus, indeed, tells us, that "as the Ćżtomach concocts the aliment, "and makes part of it uĆżeful to the body, rejecting the other; Ćżo the "lungs conĆżume part of the air, and reject the reĆżt." Whence, according to him, we may ĆżuppoĆże a little vital quinteƿƿence in the air, which Ćżerves to refresh and reĆżtore our vital Ćżpirits; for which purpoĆże, the groƿƿer, and far greater part of the air, being unĆżerviceable, it is not Ćżtrange that an animal Ćżhould inceƿƿantly require fresh air. This opinion, indeed, is not abĆżurd; but it requires to be explain'd and prov'd: beĆżides, Ćżome objections may be made to it, from what has been already argued againĆżt the transmutation of air, into vital Ćżpirits. Nor is it probable, that the bare want of the generation of the uĆżual quantity of vital Ćżpirits, for leĆżs than one minute, Ćżhould be able to kill a lively animal, without the help of any external violence. And, upon this ĆżuppoĆżition, Cornelius Drebell, is affirm'd, by many credible perĆżons, to have contrived a veƿƿel to be row'd under water: for Drebell conceiv'd, that it is not the whole body of the air, but a certain Ćżpirituous part of it, that fits it for reĆżpiration; which being Ćżpent, the remaining groƿƿer body of the air, is unable to cheriĆżh the vital flame reĆżiding in the heart. So that, beĆżides the mechanical contrivance of his boat, he had a chymical liquor, which, by unĆżtopping the veƿƿel wherein it was contain'd, the fumes of it would Ćżpeedily reĆżtore to the air, foul'd by reĆżpiration, Ćżuch a proportion of vital parts, as would make it again fit for that office; and having made it my buĆżineĆżs to learn this Ćżtrange liquor, his relations conĆżtantly affirm'd, that Drebell would never diĆżcloĆże it, but to one perĆżon, who himĆżelf told me what it was.â
